Thea Derks is following the musical career of Reinbert de Leeuw, inspired by her biography Reinbert de Leeuw, mens of melodie

Today we look at the Schönberg Ensemble again, which was formed around 1974 at the Conservatoire of The Hague and quickly left their mark. The force behind it was violist Henk Guittart, who has a great passion for the music of the so-called Second Viennese School around Arnold Schönberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern.

dorowHij initiate some high-profile projects around the integral chamber music of Schönberg, Berg en Webern. For the series of concerts around Anton Webern in 1984, British soprano  Dorothy Dorow (see photo) is hired, who is a specialist in Twelve Tones music. De Leeuw had worked with her before at the Royal Conservatoire.

The Schönberg Ensemble is becoming more ambitious and initiates the ‘Nieuwe Serie’ (New Series) with a number of other ensembles. This is also the start of their cooperation with the Asko Ensemble and the two ensembles fuse in 2009.
