CCRadio Part 1, a series about net labels: Joe Frawley – Herzog. Two artists from completely different parts of the world with two completely different backgrounds. Bill Bawden (Herzog) is from London and ‘shares’ music via EPs which have been released on several net labels since 2006. Joe Frawley is from New London but in Connecticut, USA. The catalogue of Joe contains about ten albums so far, all available via his own net label.
Since the nineties a vivid music scene has been growing on the internet. No we don’t mean the illegal downloads of commercial artists. That’s another discussion. Especially the introduction of Creative Commons in 2001 opened doors to share music with the world where the copyright stays with the artist at any time, also legally. Internet has further supplied a key map to produce electronic releases in particular from every nook and all sorts of niches.
During the past few years net labels got shape by taking a clear route and music choice. For example: from Dark Ambient (DarkWinter) to Sound Art (StasisField) to Field Recordings (Impulsive Habitat) to Techno (Monokrak) to instrumental hiphop (DustedWax) etcetera, etcetera.
In the middle of all these musical releases many pearls were born; catalogues full of quality developed; and even more artists blossomed who would do really well on an ‘ordinary’ label. The CCradio series is looking for those artists of net labels with that ‘little bit extra’. In short, a fine new series to look forward to in 2012.
