Radio Romantica presents: Schubert’s ninth symphony
Tonight, a symphony of heavenly length fills up the hour of Radio Romantica. In the four parts of his 9th symphony, Schubert deals with great elan with all classical form principles, and he immerses them in the in the rich and long-winded bath of burgeoning Romanticism. You hear a recording from 1987. It was the first version with authentic instruments on CD. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment stepped over from the 18th century to Romanticism using the instruments they normally used to play Mozart and Beethoven. And that is how it probably went in 1839. Schubert’s symphony was a new experience. Lengthy, grand and compelling. Then, Mendelssohn was the conductor, tonight, Sir Charles Mackerras takes the rostrum.
