Franz Schubert, Heliopolis: 14 songs on texts of Mayerhofer and Goethe.
Tonight in Radio Romantica, a recital of 14 songs of Franz Schubert by the great German baritone Matthias Goerne and the all-round pianist and conductor Ingo Metzmacher. One of the connecting elements in all of these songs is ancient Greece by means of pictures from mythology, the world of the gods, the sun and the Mediterranean Sea. The poems also speak of grief, homesickness or tragedy. Many of the songs were written to texts of Schubert’s good friend Johann Mayrhofer, and naturally, to texts of Goethe, the poet who designed Romanticism as it were. We sympathize with the pangs of love of young persons, who find comfort in nature, but also with a lonely monk in his cell, who can only go on pilgrimage in his imagination. And, we make the acquaintance of the mythical King of Thule from Faust, and we learn about the legendary city of light, Heliopolis, for which the ancient mariners already were searching.
