Dvořák’s Piano Quintet in A major and Rachmaninoff’s Trio Élégiaque in G Minor

Rachmaninoff was still a student when he composed Trio Élégiaque. It was his first work that ever made it out of the conservatory’s walls, and the audience was pleased. The young composer had been inspired by his leading example Tchaikovsky’s impressive piano trio. When Tchaikovsky died in 1893, Rachmaninoff wrote a second version of Trio Élégiaque. The first version disappeared somewhere in a drawer, only to be found by accident in 1935. You will hear this melancholic piece played by the Storioni Trio on Radio Romantica’s broadcast, after Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 2, a rendition by the splendid Pavel Haas Quartet. The Czech musicians will play alongside Boris Giltburg, originally a Russian pianist trained in Tel Aviv. Dvořák’s massive piano quintet op.81 delves into every reach of romantic chamber music, including this composer’s usual trips to Bohemian folk music.
