Musical Romanticism, explored by Pieter de Oude.
Ian Bostridge sings songs by Robert Schumann.
In this episode of Radio Romantica, we have an hour filled with songs by Robert Schumann. The fantastic English tenor Ian Bostridge sings, and he is accompanied by the experienced accompanist Julius Drake. The cycle Dichterliebe is, of course, the focal point.
Heartbreak and unanswered emotions are the subjects. The implication of adoration or love come by regularly, but equally as often, the love declaration turns out to be a lie. That is the impression that stays with the poet and by extension, the composer and listener. Before that, the duo performed the Liederkreis Op. 24, in which Schumann deals with his stubborn future father-in-law, who tried to prevent the marriage between him and his Clara. Yet again, it shows the complex mind of the composer and the tragedy that was his life. Finally, we’ll listen to two different songs.
