Musical Romanticism, explored by Pieter de Oude.
An hour filled with Brahms. Besides his beautiful clarinet quintet op. 115, we will be playing another work of his: five parts from op. 116, the Fantasies for piano.
Brahms composed these works during vacation months he spent in Bad Ischl by the river Traun. This is where he experienced happy moments at the end of his life. Richard Mühlfeld’s clarinet performance was an enormous inspiration for Brahms. Even though not too long before he had sworn never to compose again, he composed his unforgettable clarinet quintet for this musician, along with two sonatas and a trio.
This led to him not being able to resist writing some piano music, to keep his fingers and his pen going. This resulted in his op. 116, 117, 118 and 119.
