Musical Romanticism, explored by Pieter de Oude.
We start off this hour filled with Schumann with the stunning Fantasie in C major for piano.
A standard work form the piano literature and one of Martha Argerich’s favourites. The recording was made in 1976. The work is an incredible fantasy filled journey through a romantic experience. The delightful piano quartet in E flat major for three string players and piano is a more recent recording. The members of the Jerusalem Quartet are the performers of this piece, joined by an outstanding chamber music player on grand piano, Alexander Melnikov. Here, too, the composer leads us into a wonderfully rich and comprehensive musical story from the very first note. To finish off young Martha Argerich performs an encore. Which is the first part of Des Abends from the Fantasiestücke, op.12.
