Musical Romanticism, explored by Pieter de Oude.
This time an hour of Radio Romantica entails an hour of Smetana.
You will be listening to lesser-known orchestral works by the Czech grand master performed by the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Italian conductor Gianandrea Noseda. Like many Romantic composers, Smetana was mainly inspired by the great poets of the past and pre-Romanticism for his symphonic poems. Two good examples are Shakespeare’s royal drama Richard III and Schiller’s description of the army camp of the brutal German army commander Wallenstein. Goethe is the starting point for the Fisherman and after the Prague Carnival we conclude with Hakon Jarl, the life story of a fierce Norwegian count who is murdered by his own men.
