Musical Romanticism, explored by Pieter de Oude.

Two works from the 20th century that could be called distinctly romantic. Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances are his last and most spectacular composition for orchestra.

He composed the work in New York in 1940, and it is a score filled with nostalgia and longing. You will also be listening to more of Rachmaninov’s music, but this time in Ottorino Respighi’s arrangement. This Italian worked magic with the orchestra, and with the composer’s consent he rewrote five piano studies for conductor Sergei Kuzwitsky and his Boston Symphony Orchestra.

 Playlist:

  1. Sergei Rachmaninov– Symphonic Dances

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Mariss Jansons

  1. Ottorini Respighi – Cinq Études-Tableaux to Rachmaninov

State Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Russian Federation conducted by Valeri Polianski
