Musical Romanticism, explored by Pieter de Oude.
For many listeners, this will be their first acquaintance with the music of John McEwen. This composer of Scottish origin, born in 1868, combined the melancholic atmosphere of the folk music from his native region, the Scottish Borders, with the harmonic world of French musical impressionism.
McEwen was also an esteemed professor of music theory and director at the Royal College of Music in London from 1898 to 1936. You will hear three of his string quartets as performed by the English Chilingirian Quartet, from different periods in his life.
