Musical Romanticism, explored by Pieter de Oude: an hour of Sibelius.
His first symphony from 1898 – when he was 33 years old – was already an impressive and grandly constructed orchestral work, with beautiful solos for the winds and thunderous force for the whole orchestra.
By way of introduction, you will hear the Karelia Suite, the Alla Marcia part of which you might recognise as the theme tune of this programme. Sibelius composed this work for a student party at the University of Vipuri in the eastern Finnish province of Karelia.
The unrivalled Oslo Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Mariss Jansons in both cases.
