This time, a full hour of Smetana. Enjoy the lesser-known orchestral works by the eminent Czech composer performed by the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Italian conductor Gianandrea Noseda.
Like many other Romantic composers, Smetana found great inspiration for his Symphonic Poems from the great poets of the past. Good examples include Shakespeare’s historical play Richard III, and Schiller’s depiction of the camp of the army led by Wallenstein, a ruthless German commander. Goethe was the inspiration for The Fisherman, and after the Prague Carnaval we end the programme with Hakon Jarl – the life story of a fierce Norwegian earl, who is killed by his own men.
