An old LP sleeve vs. a new CD. Pacheco.
Pacheco – 10 Great Years LP. Fania
And swinging we will enter the New Year. Because if there’s one thing Johnny Pacheco can do, besides making a brilliant latin trip, it’s loosening up that body in a rut. Therefore, in this broadcast of Record Up Your Sleeve a fine overview of Johnny Pacheco from 1963 to 1973 (the LP we chose for this Record Up Your Sleeve is a reissue of a Fania Records LP of 1973).
He was bandleader of the legendary Fania All-star band that cooperated with almost all the big names in the New York Salsa/Latin scene, for example Larry Harlow, Bobby Valentin, Ray Barretto, Willie Colón, Hector Lavoe, Pete "El Condo" Rodriguez, Ismael Miranda, Jose Cheo Feliciano, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Bobby Cruz, Rubén Blades, Celia Cruz, and the list continues.
New York was a real melting pot of creativity with regard to Latin music at the time. Many influences were cooked up to a steaming, brewing, hot, irresistible soup called Salsa. Here are 12 absolute Salsa milestones from the golden age. For an excellent image of this time I refer you to the beautiful film Our Latin Thing. A documentary made during the glory days of the Fania All-star band in 1970-1971. But of course you can also take an intense look at the sleeve of this LP: a photo directly, I think, from the film Our Latin Thing.
After Johnny Pacheco you will be hearing a selection of the CD "Quiero Boogalo!!!", released by Manzana in 1995.
These songs you will hear after the 12 songs of Johnny Pacheco:
1. Bang Bang(1a Parte) (Joe Cuba Sextet) 2’51
2. I Like It Like That (A Mi Me Gusta Asi) (Pete Rodriguez) 3’00
3. Que Bueno Boogaloo! (La Lupe Y Tito Puente) 2’45
4. Use It Before You Loose It (Bobby Valentin) 3’01
5. Ay Que Rico! (Eddie Palmieri Con Cachao) 3’28
6. Subway Joe (Joe Bataan) 2’57

Listen and enjoy and a very happy New Year to you…
