The last Sanssouci of 2025, and we see out the year with Haydn.
A great deal of music by Joseph Haydn has already been heard this year. The “father of the symphony” was regarded in the Classical era as the greatest living composer. He wrote more than 100 symphonies, which is only a part of his total output of 750 compositions.
Those not yet familiar with Haydn’s music may be surprised by the sharp humour he often manages to conceal within it. To bring the year to a close, this broadcast presents both the greatest and best-known works, while also giving attention to lesser-known pieces.
