Blues with Indian roots.
The fact that Native Americans played a part in the development of the Blues isn’t all that well-known. Yet Charley Patton [see photo], one of the most famous performers of the Delta Blues, was part Cherokee.
Singer Pura Fe is part of the Tuscarora tribe. Some of the Tuscarora people were brought to Africa as slaves in the nineteenth century. Inspired by this tragedy, Pura chose the slide guitar as her instrument and the blues as a vehicle. With her trio, she made the live album A Blues Night in North Carolina.
