A party without borders! Mixed by Streamer
Streamer or Gary Shepherd was born in the United Kingdom and grew up as an exile in the Netherlands, raised by a couple of fairy tale dogs gone astray. He composes for the choreographer Nicole Beutler, winner of many awards on the field of dance and performance. Just a few producers have such a vast musical repertory like Streamer – just on this newly homemade mix he indulges us with Afrobeat, Kuduro, Voodoo, South-African Gqom, Nigerian funk, west coast chill from Ivory Coast and a touch of Afro-Latin Cumbia.
We begin the journey in South Africa, with three songs which are heavily influenced by the smell and taste of Gqom, the trendy ghetto sound from Durban. Songs 5 and 6 take us to Angola with ‘Square Kuduro’ and ‘Bounty Hunter’, two tracks which are inspired by Kuduro, but go just a step further: with sounds Streamer likes to go beyond the cultural borders; he has created a futuristic blend on the theme.
Together with the Nigerian guitar player CJ Croquet, Streamer continues his way to Nigeria for the next part of the excursion, a journey to the good old days in Nigeria in 1977. This is the ‘feel good’ afrobeat with a big bow to the splendour of idols like William Onyeabor and Fela Kuti… sunshine tours! CJ Croquet comes back with Streamer in El plato de frijoles refritos – a plate of beans in Latin-American-Afro style/Cumbian at his best ……. a rin kin kin, a rin kin kin!
Elaborating on the Latin-American influence in Afro-music, Streamer mixes Samba with voodoo sounds recorded by himself in Haiti. Then we descent slowly to Jamaica for a groovy Bob Marley remix which gives a totally new meaning to the concept “Funking for Jamaica”. At the end of the mix there is one last trip to the Tanzanian forest filled with spirits, with finally a soft landing on Ivory Coast with a remix which is easy on the ears by Jacob’s Cotonou.
