The bumpy relationship between Beethoven and Haydn

In 1792 Beethoven travels from Bonn to Vienna to receive “Mozart’s spirit”, who had just passed away, “from Haydn’s hands”. Haydn teaches him a few times a week and makes him practice writing fugues. Haydn recommended Beethoven practice by copying his own as well as Mozart’s sheet music note for note, to learn the ropes. During hos first years in Vienna Beethoven mostly causes a stir for being an amazing pianist and improviser. Most people don’t know yet that he is also a composer.

He finds hospitality in the palace of Prince Karl von Lichnowsky, who fancies him as Mozart’s successor. And who can flaunt Beethoven.
