In ‘Stubborn Student’, on the tangents of Haydn and Beethoven, we revert to the revolutionary finale of Haydn’s String Quartet op. 54/2
In this finale, he misguides listeners by presenting them with a solemn slow piece instead of a fast movement, with a short presto piece in the middle. The young Beethoven studied Haydn’s scores extensively and liked this trick. He applied it in his vehement Piano Sonata op. 13 ‘Pathétique’ and in his light-hearted String Quartet op. 18/2.
