Composer: Astor Piazzolla

In the ambiance of Buenos Aires and the music of Astor Piazzolla.

Maria de Buenos Aires.
The first performance of tango opera Maria de Buenos Aires was in 1968. Astor Piazzolla composed the music and Horacio Ferrer wrote the text. In doing so, they introduced a new style in the tango music. The work conducts the history of the woman Maria, who at late 19th and early 20th century experienced the origin and making of the tango in the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires, which started in brothels and gambling joints in the port. Piazzola’s tango opera tells this story with all the details.
Cd: María de Buenos Aires – Tango Operita. Label: Teldec (1998), code: 3984-20632-2.

They play songs, which came into being by the cooperation of Astor Piazzolla and Horacio Ferrer in the period between 1968-1973. These songs are inextricably linked to the political background in Argentina. Both of them experienced military dictatorship, terror, bloody uprisings and prosecutions during their whole life, which undoubtedly left its effects on them, as it did with all Argentinian people. Liberty of speech, although not forbidden, was not very wise. That’s why Horacio Ferrer didn’t write poets of protest, instead he described the feelings of the people who had to live in these circumstances. Feelings of fear, solitude and insecurity. Astor Piazzolla has masterly put the words of these poems into music. Whether it’s about an execution or love, you always feel the threat, the oppression at the background. CD: Nino de mil anos (2003). Label: Aguilon
