Putumayo’s Dan Storper did research on traditional jazz and blues in both its old and new guises when he lived in New Orleans for a period in 2003. The collection contains songs from Louis Armstrnong, Louis Prima, Doc Cheatham, Dr. John, etc.

Most of the songs on this collection are of a style known as ‘son’ (literally: sound), one of the most popular and influential musical forms in Cuba. Son developed around the beginning of the 20th century in Oriente, the eastern part of Cuba. Migrating musicians brought son to havana around 1920, where its popularity exploded.
