The Palace of Nostalgia

thu 2 jan 2014 06:00
Composer: Koos Speenhoff

In a combined programme of The Chanson and The Palace of Nostalgia two hours of a sentimental repertoire: from sad emotional songs and dramatic tearjerkers to sharp parodies.

With: weeping with Patsy Cline while proceeding to the altar; a lesson in life by the Dutch former singing barber Dolf Brouwers; sailor’s grief by ‘the singing drifter’ Frans van Schaick; sorrows in prison by Jo Stafford; light-hearted irony by cabaret performer Marijke Boon; the Mexican Pedro Vargas, whose vocal cords themselves were crying, sings about a hopeless future; weeping with Jim Reeves because of the loyalty beyond the grave of his dog; the obscure duo De Bouwmeesters with emigration distress; entertainer Beatrice Kay who exposes the fate of a fallen woman; Cowboy Gerard; and of course also the Zangeres Zonder Naam (Singer without a name) with the ultimate tear jerker from the oeuvre of Koos Speenhoff and a sharp mockery of the genre by comedian Stan Freberg.
In short, two hours of emo radio.
