The genre piano etude, originally only meant for study purposes, went through a huge evolution during the 19 century. Many composers knew how to combine work with pleasure and so the genre concert etude was born. A world journey through music history in search for piano etudes. In part V works by Liszt, Heller, Gottschalk and Grieg.
In the second half of the 18th century forte piano’s were very popular. Every self-respecting home had one. That also meant loads of work for piano teachers like Clementi, who eventually started to compose study material of their own. Soon etudes grew out to be recital pieces and so the genre concert etude was born. Not only Chopin, Schumann and Liszt but also nowadays lesser known composers like Moscheles, Hummel and Von Henselt went all out in this genre. Etudes were still written a lot in the 20th century.
