The Art of the Improvisers
Pianist and composer Leo Cuypers (1947-2017) was one of the most original soloists in Dutch jazz and improv music, with a very personal and immediately recognizable style. Colleagues knew him as the ‘whizz-kid from Heemstede or Amsterdam or Maastricht’. He composed music for various interesting theatrical projects, such as the famous Zeeland Suite. Today we will play his first solo recording from 1972, and after that a fragment of the Zeeland Suite. An homage, as Leo sadly passed away on 5 September 2017, at the age of 69.
