The Early Garden

thu 4 apr 2024 20:00 hrs

One hour of browsing through early music, featuring lots of religious music. In this period after Easter, we focus on music related to this event. We will listen to motets by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Hieronymus, and Michael Praetorius.

First we will listen to six motets by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, the most prominent composer of church music in Rome during the second half of the 16th century.

Then we will listen to music by two composers from Germany with the same last name: Praetorius, whose works straddle the line between the Renaissance and Baroque periods. But Hieronymous and Michael weren’t relates. Heronymous was an organist from Hamburg, but the majority of his work consists of vocal music. Michael left behind a vast repertoire of exclusively sacred music. Characteristics of his style include a prominent role of chorales and polychoral techniques in the Venetian style.
