The Early World

sat 21 jan 2017 07:00 hour

World music, compiled by Cobie Ivens.

With the Jitka Šuranská Trio (Czech Republic), Osman Martins & Quatuor MP4 (Brazil/ Belgium), Lokkhi Terra (UK/Bangladesh), Moondog (USA).

1- Violinist and singer Jitka Šuranská, accompanied by the mandolin and bass, recorded eleven songs for this album. We will be listening to Eastern Moravian folks songs from the Czech Republic and compositions by Mariana Friedl. Mariana’s songs perfectly align with the melodies from the Moravian region and are testament to the strength of Moravian folklore today.

CD ‘Divé Husy’, Jitka Šuranská. Label: Indies Scope (2016), code: MAM 573-2. Distributie: XANGO Music. Video

2- Brazilian singer Osman Martins, percussionist Osvaldo Hernandez Novales and string quartet MP4 take on the challenge of bringing their worlds together. With his beautiful voice, Osman Martins provide an original interpretation to the bossa nova, samba and choro. Accompanied by violins, viola and cello, the arrangements of Pierre Slinckx lead the tones of Osman Martins to a new dimension.

3- London Label ‘Funkiwala Records’ present the first in a series of co-operations with ‘fusionists’ Lokkhi Terra and Bengale heavy weights Shikor Bangladesh All Stars. Lokkhi Terra has been established as one of the more innovative bands of London. They mix different ‘roots’ music to create new ‘soundscapes.’

CD ‘Bangla Rasta’, Lokkhi Terra. Label: Funkiwala Records (2015), code: CDFW004. Video

4- Moondog, aka Louis Hardin, was a musician on the streets of Manhattan for years. He was blind, crafted his own instrument, and went dressed as a Viking. He was inspired by the sounds of the streets, those of the subway or of a mist horn. This seems relatively simple, but his sound is characterized by his so-called “snaketime”, which is described as “a slithery rhythm, in unusual times.”

CD ‘Rare Material’, Moondog. Label: Roof Music (2006), code: RD2633272. Video
