Sjostakovitsj plays Sjostakovitsj
Dmitri Sjostakovitsj (1906-1975) was not only a famous composer but also a very gifted pianist. He was already admitted to the Saint Petersburg Conservatory at the age of thirteen. In 1927 he received an honourable mention at the First International Chopin Piano Concours in Warsaw. This was less than he had expected and from then on he decided to mainly apply himself to composing. As a pianist Sjostakovitsj mostly performed his own works, until his deteriorating health prevented him from doing this. During this hour you will hear Sjostakovitsj as soloist in three of his own works.
