The guitar in the last century [38]
A monthly series with guitar music from the last century. Today, the focus is on modernist guitar music from Italy.

Sylvano Bussotti (1931-2021) is mostly known because of his experiments with music notation. However, his music has many more facets. His pieces are often personal and theatrical, with many references to Greek mythology. Bussotti also composed multiple pieces for guitar, of which Ermafrodito and Ultima rara are played most often.

Bruno Maderna (1920-1973) was, among other things, a pioneer in electronic music. He composed Aulodia per Lothar for oboe d’amore – an instrument with a softer sound than a regular oboe – and optional guitar accompaniment.

Concerto di Oliena is a guitar concerto by Angelo Gilardino (1941-2022), inspired by the landscapes of Sardinia.
