The Night: Jazz

tue 10 aug 2021 01:00 hour

A whole night of jazz with in this episode attention for releases by Paul van Gysegem Quintet, Quasimode and Joe Marcinek Band, among others.

Cannonball Adderley can be counted among the greatest alto saxophonists of all time. Jim Snidero plays his works in a quintet that he leads together with trumpet player Jeremy Pelt. Snidero gives his own twist to Adderley’s works, so that it is not an attempt to imitate him as well as possible.

We continue this night with George Cables and the recently released album Too Close For Comfort. In 1964, Cables formed his own band Jazz Samaritans, which included Billy Cobham, Lenny White and Clint Houston. After that, he played in various New York jazz clubs like Top of the Gate and was briefly a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1969.

After George Cables we have music from the Joe Marcinek Band. A band that never sounds the same because of its ever-changing line-up. Each performance and album of the band consists of a different lineup of musicians.

Then, we go back to 1990 with Michael Brecker. That year he released his third album as a bandleader. The album is called Now You See It, Now You Don’t. During his career, Brecker was awarded 15 Grammys for his work and was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame after his death in 2007.

The first rehearsals of Italian-Brussels saxophonist Daniele Martini’s quartet date back to sometime in late 2015. Less than a year later, the four stepped into a studio. The release of the album followed only almost 4 years later in July 2020.

We stay in Belgium for a while during this jazz night at the Concertzender. On the same label el Negocito, the Paul van Gysegem Quintet released the album Square Talks earlier this year.

We end this night in the Far East, Japan to be exact. We stay in the live music category with Quasimode. This four-member group was formed in 2002 and since then they have been immensely popular in their home country.
