The Sun Bear Concerts van Keith Jarrett

Since the seventies Keith Jarrett has gained fame worldwide with his solo piano concerts. The American appeared to be able to ‘just’ create endless improvisations of up to 45 minutes long.  Through the years many recordings of these concerts appeared on record. “The Köln Concert” from 1975 is one of the most famous.

Tonight, The Night: Jazz will focus on the “Sun Bear Concerts” box set. The box was recorded during the November 1976 Japan tour. It might be somewhat less known than the famed Köln concert recorded the year before, but it is no less beautiful.

5 november 1976 – Kaikan Hall, Kyoto
8 november 1976 – Sankei Hall, Osaka
12 november 1976 – Aichi Auditorium, Nagoya
14 november 1976 – Nakano Sun Plaza, Tokyo
18 november 1976 – Hokkaido Kosei Nenkin Hall, Sapporo

Since the start of this century the performances of Jarrett’s improvisation concerts has gotten a lot shorter. On average they are around 5 to 15 minutes, instead of the 30 to 40 they used to be. Sadly Keith Jarrett has not been able to perform, since his left hand is no longer fully functioning after suffering a double stroke in 2018.
