The drums of Herlin Riley (1957)
Tonight’s focus is on American drummer Herlin Riley, born and raised in 1957 in the jazz capital of the world: New Orleans. Riley was only three years old when he first came into contact with drums and played the trumpet for a while during his school years. He eventually traded in the wind instrument again for drumsticks. His career is closely related to that of Wynton Marsalis. For many years he has been a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra conducted by Marsalis. You will also hear collaborations with Ahmad Jamal and Marcus Roberts and, of course, solo work by this impressive percussionist.
Wynton Marsalis – The Majesty of The Blues (1965)
