Blok 1 Concert of Youssou N’dour et les Superetoile de Dakar (2018).

 

Senegalese cultural icon Youssou Ndour makes his Proms debut in a special late-night appearance with a recent BBC Proms Concert. This largely acoustic performance spotlights Ndour’s characteristic soaring vocals and the smooth instrumental colours brought to life by his group Le Super Étoile de Dakar.

 

Blok 2 Yilian Cañizares – Invocación (2017)

Cuban violinist and singer Yilian Cañizares with new album reflects. Listen to Yilian’s eclectic background through a fabulous blend of jazz, classical, Afro-Cuban, French and Venezuelan influences.

 

Blok 3 Gaye Su Akyol – Hologram İmparatorluğu   (2016)

This second album of Gaye Su Akyol, named Hologram İmparatorluğu, refines her mix of intricate Middle Eastern rhythms, swaying strings and twang-heavy surf guitar.

 

 

Blok 4 Cuca Roseta – Luz (2017)

Cuca Roseta’s third album Luz (2017), has touches of fado’s traditional melancholy, but from the pace of her arrangements to the bounce in her voice, most of what it has is joy.

 

 

Blok 5 Sevara Nazarkhan – Tortadur

 

Label: Severamusic

With the album Tortadur, Sevara Nazarkhan came back in 2011. Recorded in Uzbekistan, but mixed at Abbey Road, this is an album dominated by pained love ballads and Sufi devotional songs that date back to the 15th century, performed live by a group of leading traditional musicians, seated in a circle with the singer.

 

Blok 6 Mor Karbasi – Ojos De Novia (2016)

Label Mintaka Music

Mor Karbasi has one of the most beautiful voices in the world music scene. Her latest album is Ojos De Novia (Eyes of the Bride) where she continues her fascinating explorations of Andalusian, Sephardic and North African Berber music.

 

 

Blok 7 Dhafer Youssef – Sounds Of Mirrors (2018)

Dhafer Youssef, the great Tunisian Oud player, returns to his traditional roots on his new masterpiece. Together with the Turkish clarinetist Husnu Senlendirici, the Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset as well as the Indian tabla player Zakir Hussain. The Sound Of Mirrors is an ode to friendship and fraternity; a fascinating musical work full of meditative beauty, tonal splendour of colour and fascinating harmonies.
