The Night: World Music

sat 18 mar 2023 01:00 hour

With the following artists : Duplex (Belgium), Kayah & Goran Bregović (Poland), The Incredible String Band (USA), Nigel Kennedy & Kroke (UK-Poland), Alan Stivell (France) and Fernando Lameirinhas (Portugal-NL).

1- Duplex.
The Belgian tandem consists of two professionals: Didier Laloy (diatonic accordion) and Damien Chierici (violin), who realized, recorded and published a colorful edition. With the 14 titles on the album, the artists have faced numerous musical challenges and genre games. As a result, here and there we get to hear an exciting recording that is a journey through the realms of world music, neofolk and some jazz shades. All this is permeated with vintage and traditional elements, which give the music a certain weight. It should definitely be mentioned that Laloy and Chierici are quality instrumentalists, and their constant “dialogues” keep potential listeners awake all the time. CD. Maelstrom – Duplex. LABEL: Zig Zag World / Arc music (2023), code EUCD2959. VIDEO

2- Kayah & Goran Bregović.
This is the fifth studio album by Polish singer Kayah, and the first in collaboration with Goran Bregović. The collaboration between these two Slavic superstars is an entertaining and intriguing mix of pop and folk elements. While Goran Bregovic may be a bit better known in the US for his Time of the Gypsy soundtrack, Kayah has come under scrutiny as a singer and lyricist. All songs on this CD have been translated into Polish from their different languages by her. She has a dark, smoldering voice that is extremely seductive and has complete control over her instrument. CD. Kayah & Bregović – Kayah & Goran Bregović. LABEL: RCA Records (2004), code: 74321-724142. VIDEO

3- The Incredible String Band.
Described as one of the most captivating groups to emerge from the esoteric 1960s, The Incredible String Band was essentially the duo of Mike Heron and Robin Williamson. Their sound consisted of haunting Celtic folk melodies complemented by a variety of Middle Eastern and Asian instruments. In the summer of 1968, The Incredible String Band gave a remarkable concert in the legendary main hall of the Fillmore East in New York City. The concert was recorded by the auditorium’s sound desk. CD. Live at the Fillmore 1968 – The Incredible String Band. LABEL: Hux (2013), code: HUX 137. VIDEO

4- Nigel Kennedy & Kroke.
Nigel Kennedy is one of England’s foremost violinists. This protégé of Yehudi Menuhin is praised for his virtuoso technique, great musicality and popularity in both the classical and popular music world. In the Polish city of Krakow, Nigel Kennedy met the Kroke trio, which was founded in 1992 by Tomasz Kukurba (violin, viola), Jerzy Bawol (accordion) and Tomasz Lato (double bass). Kroke plays modern self-composed works inspired by authentic klezmer, Arabic and gypsy music. Kennedy and Kroke play the stars of heaven together on the album East Meets East. Singer Natacha Atlas sings beautifully on the 1st track of the album: Ajde Jano. CD. East Meets East – Nigel Kennedy & Kroke. LABEL: EMI (2003), codes: EMI 5575122 + EMI 5575112. VIDEO

5- Alan Stivell.
The king of the Celtic harp, Alan Stivell, has cast a mythical shadow over Breton music and the folk revival ever since he broke onto the folk scene in the early 1960s. The album Human / Kelt is the first of three that look back on Alan Stivell’s long career. Several tracks refer straight back to the first track of his first album Harpe Celtique in 1961 and has been updated here in the presence of composer and musician Yann Tiersen (known for his song-track from the film Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain). CD. Human / kelt – Alan Stivell. LABEL: World Village WV479132. VIDEO

6-
Fernando Lameirinhas.
A Portuguese-Dutch composer, lyricist, singer and guitarist. He started making music here with his brother Antonio and performed between 1966 and 1970 as the soul duo Jess & James. They scored some hits and traded a lot. In 1975 Fernando Lameirinhas moves to Amsterdam. Over the years he developed his own style that combines fado with influences from samba. He has collaborated with many different musicians, including Stef Bos, Frank Boeijen, BLØF and Henny Vrienten. CD. Fadeando – Fernando Lameirinhas. LABEL: Biram BIR 990201. VIDEO
