The Palace of Nostalgia

sat 16 sep 2017 20:00 hour

Jazz, blues and nostalgia, by Sjaak Roodenburg. Episode: A ladies’ sorrow and a gentleman’s grief.

With the approaching autumn hanging over our heads we’re playing repertoire lavished with tears. For instance ‘Cry Me A River Blues’ by Esther Philips, ‘Another night to cry’ by blues veteran Lonnie Johnson, ‘Time out for Tears’ by The Ink Spots and ‘You’ve got me crying again’ by Connie Boswell. The weather’s not on our side either in ‘Stormy Monday Blues’ by Billy Eckstine, and if it isn’t the weather it’s despair that will occupy your mind: ‘Love Me Or Leave Me’ by Billie Holiday, ‘Salty Papa Blues’ by Dinah Washington, ‘In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning’ by Shirley Horn, ‘Friendless Blues’ by Big Bill Broonzy, ‘I’m A Fool To Want You’ by Helen Merrill, ‘When Your Lover Has Gone’ by Dorothy Dandridge, ‘Love Doesn’t Live Here Anymore’ by June Christy, ‘These Foolish Things’ by Frank Sinatra and ‘Walking After Midnight’ by Patsy Cline. Even the seemingly optimistic song ‘Another Spring’ by Nina Simone has a bitter ring to it. But never mind, this hour may seem a vale of tears, the performances are all magnificent.
