This is a fresh Palace of Nostalgia in the new year, an episode full of melancholy about failed love (Esther Phillips), Cuban party music (Tino Baroza), hyper-modern retro swing by Bernard Berkhout’s big band and a New Year’s greeting by Cathy Cooper and Lemuel Tally. We also have the curious, cycling music hippie and creator of ‘Nature Boy’ who slept under the letter ‘L’ of the famous HOLLYWOOD sign in Los Angeles, Eden Ahbez, trumpet player Clifford Brown, Toots Thielemans and the national bard Niels van der Gullik, wistful about love, once, in a cornfield made of gold.
