The Palace of Nostalgia

sat 27 feb 2021 20:00 hour

Today in the Palace, we will focus once again on the singer about whom comedian Bob Hope passed the somewhat corny judgment: ‘London is in a better shape than Paris’.

Julie London, the ravishingly beautiful vocalist who knew how to do fantastic things with the ‘thimbleful of a voice’ that she said she had.

This hour, we will also focus on material from her later years, when her voice had become even smokier. This was partly due to years of chain-smoking. Her repertoire evolved along with the times’ changing spirit, as is shown in ‘Nice Girls Don’t Stay For Breakfast’.

Those who have never heard of Julie London only have to put the titles of her albums together to understand what kind of vocalist she was: ‘Lonely Girl’, ‘All About The Blues’, ‘Your Number Please’, ‘Around Midnight’, ‘All Through The Night’ – all albums full of melancholy and longing. In her universe, it always seems to be autumn. The streets are deserted, the pavement is wet, people are waiting next to a telephone that won’t ring in a room filled with lonely cigarette smoke.
