Jazz, blues and nostalgia, by Sjaak Roodenburg.
Enjoying another hour in a musical universe of lost times. With ‘the one-armed trumpeter’, Wingy Manone, Dinah Washington in a song that caused a huge commotion when it was written by Cole Porter in 1928.
Also featured is the drilled swing orchestra of Jimmie Lunceford in a splashy arrangement by Sy Oliver, the obscure novelty group the Three Peppers, who operated in the wake of the Mills Brothers.
We also have trumpeters Art Farmer and Louis Armstrong, cowboy singer Frankie Laine, who returns to his roots in jazz with Buck Clayton’s band.
And the award-winning singer Marian Anderson, who became a figurehead in the fight for equal rights for people of colour.
