Africa on 45 rpm
The first of two-part series on small vinyl from and in Africa. From halfway the fifties to the seventies, the 45 single was the main sound carrier in Africa and many recent events of the time where a reason to release a single, from the Rumble in the Jungle Muhammed Ali and George Foreman, to the power of the Dictator of Togo, Etienne Eyadema. It wasn’t always about pop music, reggae or local versions of Rock of Soul, both also about unpolished, rough traditional music that sounded so different from the the music released in Europe as being African. Even so, the Netherlands would play an important part in the world of African singles. In this broadcast, you will hear record shop Pastor in the Barteljorisstraat in Haarlem as producer and European distributor of the best of Arabic music, and the Parisian-stationed label Philips Medium providing francophone Africa their music.
