The Source of Sound of June 2019 is dedicated to ethno-musicologist Ernst Heins (1937-2019) who passed away earlier this month and we’ll broadcast a selection of the music which he recorded and collected. Ernst Heins was an assistent of the most famous Dutch ethno-musicologist Jaap Kunst and worked his whole life at the University of Amsterdam where he taught many students in ethno-musicology and was able to compose a collection of papers, audio files and visual images. This is a unique collection for the Netherlands and it has been a place for many years, where people with collections could safeguard their special music. Sadly, this is nog longer the case, just as ethno-musicology is no longer taught at university, but the continuation of the exisiting collection seems to be ensured for the moment. Ernst Heins led the gamelan orchestra which played in the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam for many years, published a great deal of articles and books and has without a doubt contributed a great deal to the knowledge and spread of music which was worth hearing, as is in this Source of Sound.
