The script of the Source of Sound 64 Flamenco
This is an episode dedicated to Flamenco. Flamenco was one of the genres of world music that was already popular on a global scale at the start of the 20th century. This happened because artists like Lorca and Picasso spread rumours of artists like La niña de los peines, which is singer Pastora María Pavón Cruz’s stage name. It was a time when the genre mixed with other South Spanish genres like the Fandango and when the genre was performed on classical opera stages. Because of the Spanish civil war, a lot more Spaniards settled abroad, namely in France. In Paris, there were restaurants and clubs where these musicians could perform their music. Even though flamenco hasn’t been exclusively gipsy music for a long time, this image is still created to promote the flamenco experience. In this Source of Sound, you’ll listen to music by La niña de los peines, the baker’s son from Malaga Manuel Leiva, guitar player Pepe de Almeria, who survived the concentration camp Mauthausen thanks to his musical talents, the band Rosario, singer Dolores Vargas, nicknamed the gipsy earthquake ‘el terremoto gitano’ and singer Rafael Romero on tour in Japan.
