The Source of Sound 71 The Pacific Ocean. Melanesia – Sepik, Guadalcanal and Malaita

The first in a series on the music of the Pacific, this time with flute music and singing from Melanesia, from the Sepik River basin and the Solomon Islands of Guadalcanal and Malaita. It is also a renewed acquaintance with the work of the Swiss ethnomusicologist Hans Oesch whose recordings you could already hear last month in the Source of Sound on the Dream Songs of Malaysia and an introduction to the work of the French ethnomusicologist Hugo Zemp who was responsible for the recordings from the Solomon Islands. The special feature of the flute music that fills most of the programme is not only its polyphony but also its complex musical structures that bear witness to a very particular musical system without notation. It is also music that communicates with the spirits. It is music associated with all kinds of birds, which indicates that the music and communication of animals and the music and communication of people are not essentially different.
