The string quartets opus 74 by Spohr belong to his best ones. He composed the trio in 1826 for his accompanying quartet in Kassel, in which his brother Ferdinand played the viola. In Kassel, Spohr was in particular entrusted with leading the opera. Still, he didn’t ignore the chamber music and returned time and again to the string quartet, both as soloist in the ‘quatuors brillants’ as in the capacity of a true ensemble player with professionals of his level. In the quartet in D we can hear mood sketches which remind us of his operas Jessonda and Der Berggeist. The quartet in A is once again a true ‘quatuor brillant’, a piece of work which was still performed everywhere with great success until after 1900.
