In producer Leo Samama’s overview book ‘Het Strijkwartet’ (AUP 2018), little attention was paid to composer Carl Czerny (1791-1857). We will now do him justice. The String Quartets in D major and A minor probably date back to the last decade of Czerny’s life, somewhere between 1850 and 1857. The tone and composition of Quartet D major is more classical than the passionate and particularly melodious Quartet A minor. It may very well be that Czerny’s choice of pitch classes was representative for the characters of the quartets which was a common approach in the 18th century.
