– Repeat – Contemporaries of Beethoven 5: Friedrich Fesca

Like Spohr, Friedrich Fesca was a thorough and successful violinist. Because of an illness, however, he was hardly able to play after his thirtieth. Carl Maria von Weber was particularly fond of Fesca’s quartet works: “Mr Fesca absolutely masters everything he wishes to express. Mozart and Haydn were his role models; like a true artist and evident in every new development in art: triggered by an external factor, generating sparks and giving nothing for free.” At the same time, he concludes that Fesca’s music doesn’t grab hold of you and all of a sudden, you will not be able to hang on to it. Nevertheless, many a home musician found Fesca’s modulations too modern around 1820… The string quartets in D (opus 12) and in D (opus 34) give a good impression of Fesca’s refined and ingenious way of composing.
