Anton Bruckner and Max Bruch

Both Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) and Max Bruch (1838-1920) did not exactly make a name for themselves as composers of string quartets. At the age of fourteen, Buch was only a teenager when he wrote his first quartet. He used fragments of it in the String Quartet in c minor, opus 9, which he wrote four years later. Anton Bruckner, on the other hand, was 38 years old when he wrote his first and only string quartet under the supervision of this teacher Otto Kitzler. Curiously enough, the quartets of these composers are strongly anchored in the tradition, with Mendelssohn and Schumann as their main role models.
