On the score of his second quartet from 1868, the twenty-year-old composer unambiguously wrote: Zweite Quartette C dur. With which he clearly established his musical heritage.
Because of his friendship with Wagner expert Edward Dannreuther, Parry became fascinated by Richard Wagner. But we don’t notice anything of that in the Third String Quartet, in G major. Dannreuther organised private concerts regularly, for which Parry composed his Third String Quartet. However, he was not happy with it and he put it away. All three string quartets disappeared in the archives of the composer, only to be discovered long after his death.
