During the war years, Darius Milhaud developed into an important and young voice of French music, somewhat comparable to Paul Hindemith in Germany. He wrote the two-movement Third String Quartet, opus 32, ‘in memoriam’ for his friend Leo Latil, who died on the battlefield. Like Schoenberg in his Second String Quartet, Milhaud added a soprano in the last movement. In 1917, Milhaud left for Brazil as the ambassador of the poet Paul Claudel. There, in Rio de Janeiro in 1918, he wrote his Fourth String Quartet, opus 46. The Fifth String Quartet, opus 64, was composed in 1920, once back in France.
