Today we will also play three works by Caroline Shaw, Ritornello, Three Essays and The Evergeen. The first is a deconstruction of a ritornello from Monteverdi’s Orfeo. The second consists of three exercises in forms of communication and miscommunication. And the third is a tribute to a specific type of tree, the Evergreen. In each of the works, Shaw shows how she manages to bring together past and present in music that is as accessible as it is sometimes enigmatic.
