Anthony Davis 75.
De Amerikaanse componist Anthony Davis beweegt zich vlot tussen vele werelden. Hij is actief als jazzpianist maar even goed componeert hij opera’s, zoals het baanbrekende X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X. In zijn werk zijn invloeden te ontwaren uit de jazz, de twaalftoonsmuziek, minimalisme en Indonesische gamelanmuziek. Begin dit jaar werd Anthony Davis 75 jaar. Als sociaal geëngageerde, Afro-Amerikaanse componist schuwt Davis niet om de actualiteit op te zoeken, zoals in zijn Pulitzerprijs winnende opera The Central Park Five. In deze Thema uitzending staat zijn grootschalige, instrumentale werk voor orkest en ensemble uit de jaren tachtig centraal. Een aantal van zijn composities schreef Davis voor zijn eigen Episteme ensemble. Van Davis klinkt onder meer zijn Vioolconcert Maps, het pianoconcert Wayang No. 5 en zijn balletscore Hemispheres.
