Thou singest ye carol

Arnold Schönberg (1874-1951) loved, hated, idolised, demonised. Part 1

At the end of the 19th century, Vienna was a bustling cultural centre; only Paris rivalled its status. Gustav Klimt, Sigmund Freud, Arthur Schnitzler, Gustav Mahler, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Oskar Kokoschka, Theodor Hertzl and Egon Schiele lived and worked in Vienna. A bustling city with an exceptional reputation. Led by Arnold Schönberg, a new musical sound was created. Not everybody was pleased with that. The premiere of his first string quartet caused a scandal, and that was not all. Yet, the Second Viennese School proved to be a lasting influence for classical music in the next century.

In this episode, you’ll hear vocal works all the way through.

On February 28, you’ll hear the ‘Gurre Lieder’ in its original version for vocals and piano.
